3 COUNTY SCHOOLS IN TOP 2 PERCENT OF UNITED STATES HIGH SCHOOLS, ACCORDING TO U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT

Severna Park, Broadneck, and South River high schools are among the elite when it comes to high schools around the United States, according to a recent study in U.S. News & World Report.

In assessing more than 21,000 high schools across the country on a variety of criteria, U.S. News & World Report and the American Institutes for Research (AIR) placed Severna Park at 213 on the list, Broadneck at 256, and South River at 342. All three schools earned Gold Medal status, a designation given only to the top 500 schools in the survey.

Among Maryland schools, Severna Park was 8th, Broadneck was 11th, and South River was 15th. Chesapeake High School earned a Silver Medal by ranking 28th in Maryland and 730th on the national list.

“Across our county our schools are doing tremendous work to help students increase their academic achievement, and this recognition is another example of that effort,” Superintendent Kevin Maxwell said. “These results come about through the incredible partnership of students, parents, school staff, and the great school community, and everyone should take great pride in this recognition.”

Rankings were determined through a three-step process that examined overall student performance; the performance of the school’s “least-advantaged” students when compared to similar students across the state; and an assessment of student college readiness, using Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate test data as the benchmark.
