The Board of Education of Anne Arundel County will announce the appointment of its choice for Superintendent of Schools at its next meeting, scheduled for 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 7, 2014. The meeting will be held in the Board Room at the Parham Building, located at 2644 Riva Road in Annapolis.
The appointment, which will be contingent on the finalization of a contract between the candidate and the Board, will nearly bring to a close a nine-month process to find a successor to Interim Superintendent of Schools Mamie J. Perkins. Mrs. Perkins, whose 11-month contract expires on June 30, 2014, chose not to seek the position on a permanent basis.
By state law, the Board must appoint a candidate to a four-year term, which would begin on July 1, 2014. In March, the Board announced the following three finalists for the position:
- Dr. George Arlotto, Chief of Staff and former Associate Superintendent for School Performance, Anne Arundel County Public Schools
- Francisco Durán, Superintendent, Trenton (N.J.) Public Schools
- Dr. Maureen McMahon, Assistant Superintendent for Advanced Studies and Programs, Anne Arundel County Public Schools
A complete revised agenda for the meeting and more information on agenda items is posted on the AACPS Web site, www.aacps.org, in the Board Docs section under the Board of Education tab.
The general session of Wednesday’s Board meeting will be broadcast live on AACPS-TV, which can be found on Channel 96 on Comcast and Broadstripe, and Channel 36 on Verizon. Rebroadcasts are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. the day after the meeting and 2:00 p.m. on subsequent Sundays.
