I am fortunate to be surrounded by an incredible team of people who know the road ahead of us and, I believe, will lead us where we want to go.”

Dr. Arlotto, 50, is currently Chief of Staff for the school system. He has held a variety of positions since joining AACPS in 2006, including: Director of High Schools; Chief School Performance Officer; Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction & School Performance; and Associate Superintendent.

He will succeed Interim Superintendent Mamie J. Perkins, whose 11-month contract expires on June 30, 2014. Mrs. Perkins chose not to seek the position on a permanent basis.

“This has been a very comprehensive and thorough process that was designed to find the best person to lead our school system forward, to build on the successes we have had, and to make changes necessary to accelerate growth in areas where we have not been as successful as we would have liked,” Board President Teresa Milio Birge said. “The Board believes Dr. Arlotto is that person, and that he and his team will work not only with the Board, but with our parents, students, employees, and community and business partners to propel our school system to new heights.”

Dr. Arlotto began his educational career in 1986 as a biology and mathematics teacher at a preparatory boarding school in Lynchburg, Va. During his time in Lynchburg he also served as the school’s wrestling and lacrosse coach, assistant director of admissions, and dorm parent.

He worked in the District of Columbia Public Schools from 1992 to 2000, and then served as a high school assistant principal and principal in Montgomery County until coming to Anne Arundel County Public Schools in 2006.

Dr. Arlotto holds a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Lynchburg College, a Master of Education degree in Administration & Supervision from the University of Virginia, and a Doctoral degree in Educational Administration and Policy Studies from the George Washington University.

He and his wife, Regina, have three children.
