SUPERINTENDENT KEVIN MAXWELL RESIGNS TO BECOME CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS; BOARD TO DISCUSS VACANCY AT EMERGENCY CLOSED SESSION ON SATURDAY

Schools Superintendent Kevin Maxwell today submitted his resignation to the Anne Arundel County Board of Education in order to take a similar position in Prince George’s County Public Schools.

The letter was submitted shortly after Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker III announced Dr. Maxwell as his choice to be the system’s new Chief Executive Officer. Prince George’s County Public Schools is the state’s second largest school system.

“Anne Arundel County Public Schools would like to thank Dr. Maxwell for his service to our school system, and we wish him the best,” Board President Andrew Pruski said. “Our charge as a Board is to continue to provide a quality public education in Anne Arundel County to all of our students. This Board will move quickly to name an interim superintendent and to establish a clear process to select a new permanent superintendent. I can assure the parents, employees, and students of our school system as well as all of the residents of our county that the process will be as transparent and open to the public as possible. I am confident this Board will select the best person to lead us forward.”

Pruski said the Board will meet at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 29, 2013, at the Parham Building for the express purpose of going into closed session to discuss the process of naming an interim superintendent to guide the school system over the next year. Pursuant to Section 10-508(a) (1) of the State Government Article of the Annotated Code of Maryland, the meeting will not be open to the public.

Dr. Maxwell came to Anne Arundel County Public Schools, Maryland’s fifth largest school system, in July 2006 and was reappointed unanimously in 2010. Previously, he worked for Prince George’s County Public Schools for 22½ years and Montgomery County Public Schools for six years. He and the Board will establish a mutually agreeable date for his departure.
