Quarterfield Elementary School student Sujan Dhakal will find himself in elite company on Saturday when he competes with the top 60 blind students from across the United States and Canada in the 2013 National Braille Challenge. Sujan, who just completed second grade, earned his spot in the competition through a superior performance in his age group at the Braille Challenge Regional Competition at The Maryland School for the Blind in February.
Participants in the National Braille Challenge will compete in challenging categories requiring them to transcribe, type, and read braille. Sujan speaks fluent English and Nepali. An avid reader, he reads braille in English and is interested in learning to read braille in Nepali.
“Sujan is every librarian’s dream student,” Quarterfield Elementary media specialist Linda Wallace said. “He loves to read and he is always interested in checking out a new chapter book, especially books from the Black Eyed Susan Collection. Sujan is a blessing to librarians everywhere!”
In addition to reading, Sujan enjoys technology, swimming, soccer, and playing the piano.
