The Anne Arundel County Board of Education will receive Superintendent Mamie J. Perkins’ proposed Fiscal Year 2015 Capital Budget and will hear a presentation from the Maryland Association of Boards of Education (MABE) about the superintendent search process at its next meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, September 11, 2013, in the Board Room at the Parham Building, 2644 Riva Road, Annapolis.
The Board will meet at 8:30 a.m. to vote to go into closed session, during which time it will discuss confidential matters as permitted by the Maryland Open Meetings Act including, but not limited to, legal advice, personnel, and negotiations. Closed session is not open to the public. The general session of the meeting, which is open to the public, will begin at 10:00 a.m.
The capital budget establishes funding priorities for construction projects at schools across the county. The Board will conduct a public workshop on the budget beginning at approximately 2 p.m. on September 11, 2013. No public testimony will be taken at the workshop, but testimony will be taken at a public hearing scheduled to be held before the Board takes up initial adoption at the September 25, 2013, meeting. That meeting begins at 7 p.m.
Once adopted, the plan will be submitted to the State of Maryland for funding consideration. It will also be part of the school system’s overall FY2015 budget request, to be forwarded to the County Executive in February 2014.
At the September 11 meeting, MABE representatives will provide an overview of the superintendent search process including potential timelines. The Board has not yet decided on the logistics of a search, or whether to hire a firm to conduct the search.

Board to hold retreat on September 15, 2013
The Board will engage in professional development regarding leadership development at its annual retreat, scheduled for Sunday, September 15, 2013.
The Board will also use the session to prepare for the search for a new superintendent who will lead Anne Arundel County Public Schools beginning July 1, 2014. The retreat, which is open to the public, will run from 1 to 6 p.m. in the dining hall at the Arlington Echo Outdoor Education Center.
The Board will hear again from MABE representatives regarding its roles, responsibilities, and legal obligations as it relates to the search for and hiring of a new superintendent.
