BROOKLYN PARK MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHER TONY JACKSON NAMED MARYLAND DANCE EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR; OLD MILL’S MOEDE ALSO HONORED

Brooklyn Park Middle School dance teacher Tony Jackson has been named Dance Educator of the Year by the Maryland Dance Education Association (MDEA).

Jackson began his teaching career with Anne Arundel County Public Schools at MacArthur Middle School and transitioned to the Apex Arts and Liberal Arts Dance Educator position at Brooklyn Park Middle School this school year.

Christiana Walsh, Coordinator of Health, Physical Education and Dance and Nicole Deming, Dance Teacher Specialist, describe Mr. Jackson as an individual who has built a reputation not only as an outstanding dance educator, but as someone who fosters a cultural responsive classroom, is supportive to his teacher colleagues, and is inclusive, understanding, passionate, and kind.

The award is given annually to a dance educator who serves as a positive role model epitomizing fine arts dance education for all students, utilizes various teaching methodologies and plans innovative learning experiences, and conducts a balanced and sequential curriculum.

“In my classroom, we believe good humanity comes before good dancing,” Jackson said. “After virtual learning, I noticed a lot of my students struggling with regulating their emotions, embracing tolerance and acceptance, and connecting to my content. By implementing culturally responsive instruction, restorative practices, and social emotional learning in my classroom environment, my students can feel supported and included in their learning. They’ve developed knowledge of themselves while simultaneously learning about their peers’ cultures and diverse backgrounds. This gives my students a deep perspective of dance while also learning about tolerance, kindness and acceptance.”

Jackson strives to raise the level of artistry and professionalism at Brooklyn Park Middle School.

“Mr. Jackson is an extraordinary dance teacher who possesses unparalleled skills in both teaching and recruitment. His passion for dance is infectious, captivating the hearts of both students and parents alike,” said Brooklyn Park Middle School Principal Beth Shakan. “Mr. Jackson’s classes are a harmonious blend of technical precision, creativity, and most importantly, joy. We are thrilled that his impact is being noticed outside of Brooklyn Park Middle.”
