The Board of Education of Anne Arundel County is scheduled to discuss and adopt its final Fiscal Year 2018 operating and capital budgets at its next meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, June 21, 2017. The meeting will be held in the Board Room at the Parham Building, located at 2644 Riva Road in Annapolis.
The County Council formally adopted its FY2018 operating and capital budgets, which contain school system funding, on June 14, 2017.
While the Board has no authority to alter the capital budget adopted by the Council, it can consider reallocating funds within operating budget categories if it so desires.
The operating budget approved by the Council contains funding sufficient for a full step increase for most eligible employees and a similar increase for non-represented employees, though the exact nature of increases will be determined through negotiations with employee bargaining units. The budget provides more than $20 million in one-time and recurring funding to address the structural deficit in AACPS’ healthcare plan. It also contains sufficient funding to open the Monarch Annapolis Public Contract School in September.
The capital budget contains FY2018 funding to continue design and/or construction projects at Manor View, High Point, George Cromwell, Jessup, Arnold, Edgewater, Tyler Heights, and Richard Henry Lee elementary schools, as well as the Crofton Area High School.
The Board will meet on Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. to vote to go into closed session, during which time it will discuss confidential matters as permitted by the Maryland Open Meetings Act including, but not limited to, legal advice, personnel, and negotiations. Closed session is not open to the public. The general session of the meeting, which is open to the public, will begin at 10 a.m.
Wednesday’s meeting will be also be the last for outgoing student Board member Carolyn Williams.
A complete agenda for the meeting accompanies this news release. More information on agenda items will be posted on the AACPS website in the Board Docs section under the Board of Education tab.
The general session of Wednesday’s Board meeting will be broadcast live on AACPS-TV, which can be found on Channel 96 on Comcast and Broadstripe, and Channel 36 on Verizon. High definition broadcasts can be seen on Channel 996 on Comcast, Channel 496 on Broadstripe, and Channel 1961 on Verizon.
