BOARD TO RECEIVE SUPERINTENDENT’S FY2018 CAPITAL BUDGET PROPOSAL, DISCUSS SCHOOL START AND DISMISSAL TIMES AT NEXT MEETING

The Board of Education of Anne Arundel County will receive Superintendent George Arlotto’s proposed Fiscal Year 2018 Capital Budget at its next meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, September 7, 2016, in the Board Room at the Parham Building, 2644 Riva Road, Annapolis.

The Board will meet at 8:00 a.m. to vote to go into closed session, during which time it will discuss confidential matters as permitted by the Maryland Open Meetings Act including, but not limited to, legal advice, personnel, and negotiations. Closed session is not open to the public. The general session of the meeting, which is open to the public, will begin at 10:00 a.m.

The capital budget establishes funding priorities for construction projects at schools across the county. The Board will conduct a public workshop on the budget beginning at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, September 13, in the Board Room. No public testimony will be taken at the workshop, but testimony will be taken at a public hearing scheduled to be held before the Board takes up initial adoption at its regularly scheduled September 21 meeting. That meeting begins at 7 p.m.

Once adopted, the plan will be submitted to the State of Maryland for funding consideration. It will also be part of the school system’s overall FY2018 budget request, to be forwarded to the County Executive in February 2017.

Also at the meeting, the Board will have further discussion on two plans presented to it in April 2016 regarding a shift in school start and dismissal times in the 2017-2018 school year.

A complete agenda for the meeting accompanies this news release. More information on agenda items will be posted on the AACPS website in the Board Docs section under the Board of Education tab.

The general session for the September 7 meeting will be broadcast live on AACPS-TV, which can be found on Channel 96 on Comcast and Broadstripe, and Channel 36 on Verizon. High definition broadcasts can be seen on Channel 996 on Comcast and Channel 496 on Broadstripe. Rebroadcasts are scheduled for 7 p.m. the day after the meeting and 2 p.m. on subsequent Sundays.
