ARNOLD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WINS 2014 CHESAPEAKE CUP

Arnold Elementary School has captured the coveted 2014 Chesapeake Cup for its participation in the Anne Arundel County Public Library’s Summer Reading Program this year.

The cup is presented annually to a public and private school with more than 25 percent of its enrollment participating in the program. About 25.5 percent of Arnold’s 424 students enrolled, a 6.5 percentage point increase from the year before.

“I am so proud of our young readers who committed themselves to maintaining their skills during the summer,” Arnold Principal Shauna Kauffman said. “Their work is already showing in our classrooms where we’ve been able to jump right in to exciting, rigorous activities and continue to grow student reading capacities.”

The cup was presented to the school today by library officials joined by Maryland Speaker of the House Delegates Mike Busch and County Councilman Dick Ladd.

This is the 18th year that the library system has awarded the Chesapeake Cup. It also awards framed certificates of achievement to each public and private school that achieves at least 25 percent participation in the Summer Reading Club. Park Elementary School won the award for Most Improved Participant.

Last summer, more than 15,300 students across all grade levels registered for the Club through the theme, “Fizz, Boom, Read.” The program ran from June through July at all 15 county library branches with plenty of incentives along the way.
