SCHOOL YEAR 2014-2015 CALENDAR CHANGES, CELL PHONE TOWERS ON BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING AGENDA

In light of a recent survey regarding the handling of inclement weather days, the Board of Education of Anne Arundel County will discuss possible changes to the upcoming school year calendar at its next meeting, scheduled for 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 7, 2014. The meeting will be held in the Board Room at the Parham Building, located at 2644 Riva Road in Annapolis.

The Board recently conducted the survey to gauge the opinions of parents, students, and employees as to how to best build in potential makeup days needed for inclement weather. In the current school year, Anne Arundel County Public Schools has closed nine times for inclement weather. Six of those days have been made up by adding days in various parts of the school year, and three have been waived by state Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lillian Lowery.

Any changes adopted by the Board at Wednesday’s meeting will go into effect for the school year that begins on August 25, 2014.

At Wednesday’s meeting, the Board will also review proposals to place telecommunication transmission towers at three schools: Annapolis Middle School, the Center for Applied Technology – North, and the Magothy River/Severn River middle schools property. This will be the second time plans for the Annapolis Middle and CAT-North projects have come before the Board.

The Board will also consider approval of more than $2.5 million in contracts related to the replacement of Rolling Knolls Elementary School. Construction on the $35 million project is scheduled to begin in June and be completed in January 2016.

The Board will meet at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday to vote to go into closed session, during which time it will discuss confidential matters as permitted by the Maryland Open Meetings Act including, but not limited to, legal advice, personnel, and negotiations. Closed session is not open to the public. The general session of the meeting, which is open to the public, will begin at 10 a.m.

A complete agenda for the meeting accompanies this news release. More information on agenda items will be posted on the AACPS Web site, www.aacps.org, in the Board Docs section under the Board of Education tab.

The general session of Wednesday’s Board meeting will be broadcast live on AACPS-TV, which can be found on Channel 96 on Comcast and Broadstripe, and Channel 36 on Verizon. Rebroadcasts are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. the day after the meeting and 2:00 p.m. on subsequent Sundays.
