STATEMENT FROM INTERIM SUPERINTENDENT MAMIE J. PERKINS ON PASSING OF MARITA CARROLL

Interim Superintendent Mamie J. Perkins today released the following statement on the death of Marita Carroll, a longtime educator and community activist who died Saturday at the age of 91:

“Anne Arundel County and our Anne Arundel County Public Schools family lost an icon Saturday with the passing of Marita Carroll. As an educator and activist, she shared more than 35 years of her life inspiring students and mentoring school system personnel to ensure high standards and the very best possible education for all students. She was an exemplary educator and cared deeply for the youth in this community.

In addition to her work in the schoolhouse, she will be remembered for her tireless advocacy for equality, justice, and civil rights. She was one of the “Annapolis Five” – a group which conducted a sit-in at a small West Street café for a seat in the establishment in November 1960 – and she joined others in the fight to ensure fair and equal treatment of African-American teachers.

She will be greatly missed, but her legacy of making a difference on behalf of our community will live on for generations to come.”
