The number of Woodside Elementary School students who registered for the Anne Arundel County Public Library’s Summer Reading Program this year more than doubled compared to the year before, leading the school to capture the library system’s 2013 Chesapeake Cup.
The cup is presented annually to the public and private school with the highest percentage of membership per enrollment in the library’s Summer Reading Program. More than 26 percent of Woodside’s students enrolled, a dramatic increase from the 12 percent who signed up the year before. Woodside also won the title for the Most Improved Participant school.
“I am thrilled beyond words at the way our students committed themselves to take part in this program and become better readers over the summer,” Woodside Principal Melissa Gilroy said. “Their work is already paying dividends in our classrooms, where we are making magical things happen every day.”
The cup was presented to the school today by Library Administrator Hampton “Skip” Auld.
This is the 17th year that the library system has awarded the Chesapeake Cup. It also awards framed certificates of achievement to each public and private school that achieves at least 25 percent participation in the Summer Reading Club.
Last summer’s theme was “Dig Into Reading.” More than 13,000 children in preschool through 12th grade registered for the Club, which ran from June through July at all 15 county library branches.
