Citing her leadership qualities, data-driven approaches to increasing student achievement, and ability to build partnerships, the Maryland Association of Secondary School Principals has named Kimberly Winterbottom of Marley Middle School as its 2024 Principal of the Year.
Winterbottom, who is in her eighth year as principal of the Glen Burnie school, learned of the award at a surprise announcement at a meeting of Anne Arundel County Public Schools middle and high school principals.
“I am truly blessed and honored to have been nominated and now to have earned this distinguished award,” Winterbottom said. “This recognition is shared with everyone who has worked alongside me to transform Marley into the amazing school it is today. I also share this with those who have provided me with numerous opportunities and support during my administrative career because of their belief in me. Being a principal is challenging; however, my drive to improve school culture and student achievement combined with my passion for growing leaders – especially those who do not see their highest potential – are the true underpinnings for this award.”
Winterbottom attended Bodkin Elementary School and Chesapeake Bay Middle School before graduating from Chesapeake High School. She came back to her home school system as an assistant principal in 2009 and has been with AACPS ever since.
Under Winterbottom’s leadership, Marley students outperformed 16 of 19 county middle schools in district math assessments and have seen significant gains in language arts scores. Discipline referrals have gone from among the highest in the county to among the lowest.
Winterbottom has also created a plethora of community, faith-based, and business partnerships to assist students in a variety of ways. She has also placed a great emphasis on the cultivation of equitable practices and programs.
“Mrs. Winterbottom is truly deserving of this award,” said MASSP Executive Director Addie Kaufman, who presented the award.
As the state winner, Winterbottom will now participate in the National Principal of the Year program.
