57th ANNUAL REGIONAL SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING EXPO GRAND AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Megan Yeager of Chesapeake Science Point Charter School was named the Grand Award Winner at the 57th annual Anne Arundel County Public Schools Regional Science and Engineering Expo Awards Ceremony held at Chesapeake High School on March 14, 2023.  Her project, “Reducing Methane using Renewables,” tested the process of using activated carbon to remove methane from the air.  She is now eligible to enter the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) which will be held in Dallas this May.

Additionally, AACPS named two Grand Award runner-up winners. Lily McCallister from Severna Park High School for her project “Worming Through Plastic” and Addison Johns from Annapolis High School for her project “Please Protect My Flagella.” Both will also be eligible to compete at ISEF.

Nathan Watters of Chesapeake Science Point Charter School was announced as the Lemelson Early Inventor Grand Prize winner for having the most outstanding middle school project.  His project studying “Mineral-Based Sunscreens” is also designated as a Thermofisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge winner and eligible to compete at the regional competition.

The AACPS Regional Science and Engineering Expo is dedicated to promoting science education and recognizing student achievement in the STEM fields. The award ceremony is a culmination for students developing, refining, and promoting their research projects under the guidance of their teachers and community advisors.

The awards ceremony included opening remarks by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mark Bedell and closings remarks by Board of Education President Dr. Joanna Tobin who were both on hand to congratulate all the winners.

In addition to the grand awards, county middle and high school students earned numerous other accolades at the expo, ranging from special awards presented by community sponsors to category awards based on guidelines from ISEF.  The presenting sponsor of the Regional Science and Engineering Expo, Educational Systems Federal Credit Union, gave remarks and prizes along with the Education Foundation of Anne Arundel County Public Schools which sponsored the “Viewer’s Choice” award.  Additional community award sponsors included Friends of Jug Bay, Society of Women Engineers, Ms. Nancy Koles on behalf of the Josef Wonsever STEM Award, and the US Public Health Service.
