Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) Superintendent Kevin Maxwell and University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) President Freeman A. Hrabowski III today announced a partnership that will help deserving county seniors defray the costs of college with scholarships that could total as much as $72,000.
The agreement calls for the UMBC-Anne Arundel County Public Schools Superintendent Award to be given annually to one student from each of the county’s 12 comprehensive high schools. The four-year awards will range from $12,000 to $18,000 a year based on the student’s academic credentials.
“We have many outstanding partnerships with UMBC that help our students, teachers, and other employees in a number of ways,” AACPS Superintendent Kevin Maxwell, who received his Ph.D. from UMBC in 2002, said. “This partnership will directly impact our students, some of whom may not have otherwise had the opportunity to attend college, and help them achieve their hopes and dreams at one of the nation’s premiere universities.”
To qualify for the scholarships, students must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 and a minimum combined SAT critical reading and math score of 1450 with a writing score of at least 600, or a minimum ACT composite score of 33.
To maintain the scholarship from year to year at UMBC, students must be enrolled full-time, earn at least a 3.25 cumulative GPA and have no more than one semester below a 3.0 semester GPA.
“We’re delighted about this new scholarship program, which will bring talented students to UMBC while making college more accessible for them,” Hrabowski said. “This builds on our already strong partnerships with Anne Arundel County schools, and we look forward to continuing to work together for the benefit of our students and our State.”
UMBC, located in Catonsville, has approximately 11,000 undergraduate students. About 9 percent of incoming freshmen come from Anne Arundel County.
