South River High School’s varsity football team will forfeit three of its wins this season after it was determined that an ineligible player participated in games.
Anne Arundel County Public Schools imposed the penalty after investigating the matter. AACPS is not identifying the player or the reason for ineligibility.
By state law, the student-athlete is subject to additional eligibility penalties.
The decision means the Seahawks enter this week’s game against Annapolis with a 2-6 record. While the change in record will alter the team’s postseason seeding, it will not keep South River out of the Class 4A playoffs because for the first time, all high school teams will qualify for the playoffs this year.
