As some parents are aware, there have been several reports of children being approached by a white van in the Crofton area in recent days. The instances, which all happened off of school property, were reported to police. This morning, using a tag number provided by a member of the public, police interviewed the owner of the van. The man is a painter who is working in the area. Police have closed this investigation and do not believe there is any threat to children at this point.
Still, these incidents provide a good opportunity to talk to children about being aware of their surroundings and:
- walking in a groups or at least with one other person
- being aware of their surroundings
- developing a plan of action if a stranger approaches them
- reporting anything unusual or upsetting to a responsible adult (parent, guardian, school staff member, police officer, etc.) immediately.
