Drake Smith, a rising senior at Meade High School, will be sworn in as the 47th student member of the Board of Education of Anne Arundel County during a ceremony at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 1, 2020, in the Board Room at the Carol S. Parham Building, located at 2644 Riva Road in Annapolis.
Drake will succeed Rida Alvi, an Annapolis High School graduate whose term ends on June 30. Anne Arundel County’s student member of the Board is the only one in the nation serving on a local school board who has full voting rights.
Drake will take part in the Board’s first meeting of the 2020-2021 school year on July 8, 2020.
Also serving on the Board are President Michelle Corkadel of Edgewater, Vice President Melissa Ellis of Millersville, Candace C.W. Antwine of Jessup, Terry Gilleland of Millersville, Eric Grannon of Davidsonville, Julie Hummer of Laurel, Robert C. Leib of Harwood, and Dana Schallheim of Severna Park.
The ceremony will be broadcast live on AACPS-TV, which can be found on Channel 96 on Comcast and Broadstripe, and Channel 36 on Verizon. High definition broadcasts can be seen on Channel 996 on Comcast, Channel 496 on Broadstripe, and Channel 1961 on Verizon.

SPECIAL NOTE: Due to restrictions in place because of the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person attendance will be limited to Drake, members of his family, Board of Education members, and necessary school system and Clerk of the Court staff. Other members of the public and media will, unfortunately, not be allowed to attend but may view the ceremony as described above.
