BOARD OF EDUCATION ADOPTS $163 MILLION FY2021 CAPITAL BUDGET

The Board of Education has unanimously approved a Fiscal Year 2021 Capital Budget of $163 million, a spending plan that is $9.6 million more than that proposed by County Executive Steuart Pittman on May 1.

The plan, adopted at the Board’s June 17, 2020, meeting, includes $2.5 million added by the County Council for design of a new West County Elementary School. The County Executive subsequently added funding in future years for construction of the school.

It also includes $94.3 million in study, design and/or construction funding for eight other major school projects: Edgewater Elementary ($5.6 million); Tyler Heights Elementary ($4.8 million); Richard Henry Lee Elementary ($4.4 million); Quarterfield Elementary ($15.4 million); Hillsmere Elementary ($12.2 million); Rippling Woods Elementary ($16.9 million); Old Mill West High School ($32.0 million); and Old Mill Middle School South ($3.0 million).

The capital budget also contains $5.5 million for an all-day kindergarten and prekindergarten addition at Sunset and Van Bokkelen elementary schools, $8.2 million for an addition at Arundel Middle School, and $6.6 million for athletic stadium improvements.
