Members of the Joint Initiative to Eliminate the Opportunity Gap committee will provide an update on the work of the group at a public meeting set for 6 p.m. on Thursday, February 6, 2020.
The meeting will be held in the auditorium at Broadneck High School, located at 1265 Green Holly Drive in Annapolis.
The joint effort is a collaboration of Anne Arundel County Public Schools and the Anne Arundel County Government. It was announced as the Joint Initiative to Eliminate the Achievement Gap but committee members altered the name to better reflect the group’s efforts to enhance equitable opportunities for all students, which leads to elimination of gaps.
The committee has met four times to review the feedback gathered from the community meeting on September 23, 2019, and to discuss related issues and solutions. It has examined possible root causes of academic and systemic gaps, including housing and health care, and has formed subcommittees focused on curriculum, systemic racism, social determinants, discipline and family life.
At the February 6 meeting, members of each subcommittee will provide insight on their work. Attendees will be able to hear a subcommittee discussion of their choice.
Those in attendance will also have an opportunity to provide input on next steps. School-age activities will be provided for children who attend with their families.
Spanish interpreters will be available for those needing this service. Those who need interpretation in another language should call 410-222-5414 to make arrangements.
