BOARD OF EDUCATION TO CONSIDER PLAN TO LEAVE SCHOOL MEAL PRICES UNCHANGED FOR 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR

The Board of Education of Anne Arundel County will consider a recommendation from Superintendent George Arlotto to leave school meal prices at the same level as they have been for six years at its next meeting, scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1, 2019.

Under Dr. Arlotto’s recommendation, full-price breakfast at all levels would remain at $1.50, elementary school lunches would cost $2.75, and secondary school lunches would cost $3.00. The price of milk would remain at 55 cents. Reduced-price breakfast and meal prices at all levels would also remain unchanged.

Anne Arundel County Public Schools meal prices have not changed since the 2014-2015 school year. The school system’s Food and Nutrition Services receives no county funding at present, and instead relies on revenue from federal reimbursements (57 percent), food sales (39 percent), and state funding (4 percent) to operate. This year, AACPS will serve approximately 5.9 million lunches, 3.4 million breakfasts, 115,000 dinners, and 100,000 summer meals.

Wednesday’s meeting will be held in the Board Room at the Parham Building, located at 2644 Riva Road, Annapolis. In a departure from its normal schedule, the Board’s first meeting of the month will occur at night to allow Board members to attend County Executive Steuart Pittman’s Fiscal Year 2020 budget address earlier in the day.

At Wednesday’s meeting, the Board will also:

  • hear an overview of Mr. Pittman’s recommended Fiscal Year 2020 budget as it relates to the school system.
  • discuss and vote on educational specifications for Quarterfield, Hillsmere, and Rippling Woods elementary schools. The documents set forth the optimum teaching and learning environments, consistent with fiscal constraints, for the schools and set the stage for renovation or replacement projects scheduled to occur over the next few years.

The Board will meet in a public session at 5:00 p.m. for the sole purpose of voting to immediately go into closed session, during which time it will discuss confidential matters as permitted by the Maryland Open Meetings Act including, but not limited to, legal advice, personnel, and negotiations. Closed session is not open to the public. The public session of the meeting will resume at 7 p.m.

A complete agenda for the meeting accompanies this news release. More information on agenda items will be posted on the AACPS website in the Board Docs section under the Board of Education tab.

The general session of Wednesday’s Board meeting will be broadcast live on AACPS-TV, which can be found on Channel 96 on Comcast and Broadstripe, and Channel 36 on Verizon. High definition broadcasts can be seen on Channel 996 on Comcast, Channel 496 on Broadstripe, and Channel 1961 on Verizon. Rebroadcasts are scheduled for 7 p.m. the day after the meeting and 2 p.m. on subsequent Sundays.
