BOARD OF EDUCATION TO ADOPT FINAL FY2019 OPERATING, CAPITAL BUDGETS AT JUNE 20, 2018, MEETING

The Board of Education of Anne Arundel County is scheduled to discuss and adopt its final Fiscal Year 2019 operating and capital budgets at its next meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, June 20, 2018. The meeting will be held in the Board Room at the Parham Building, located at 2644 Riva Road in Annapolis.

The County Council formally adopted its FY2019 operating and capital budgets, which contain school system funding, on June 14, 2018. While the Board has no authority to alter the capital budget adopted by the Council, it can consider reallocating funds within operating budget categories if warranted.

The operating budget approved by the Council contains funding sufficient for two step increases – one on July 1 and one at mid-year – for eligible employees and a similar increase for non-represented employees, though the exact nature of such increases will be determined through negotiations with employee bargaining units. The budget also provides funding for 86 teachers to help address enrollment increases, increased staffing to expand the successful Triple-E initiative to elementary schools in the Annapolis cluster and open the Carrie Weedon Early Education Center in South County, and additional special educators, school counselors, and school psychologists.

The capital budget contains FY2019 funding to continue construction projects at Manor View, High Point, George Cromwell, Jessup, and Arnold elementary schools as well as Crofton High School. It also contains funding to begin revitalization projects at Edgewater, Tyler Heights, and Richard Henry Lee elementary schools.

Wednesday’s meeting will be held in the Board Room at the Parham Building, 2644 Riva Road, Annapolis. The Board will meet in a public session at 8:30 a.m. for the sole purpose of voting to immediately go into closed session, during which time it will discuss confidential matters as permitted by the Maryland Open Meetings Act including, but not limited to, legal advice, personnel, and negotiations. Closed session is not open to the public. The public session of the meeting will resume at 10 a.m.

A complete agenda for the meeting accompanies this news release. More information on agenda items will be posted on the AACPS website in the Board Docs section under the Board of Education tab.
