BOARD OF EDUCATION TO CONSIDER PLAN TO LEAVE SCHOOL MEAL PRICES UNCHANGED FOR 2018-2019 SCHOOL YEAR

The Board of Education of Anne Arundel County will consider a recommendation from Superintendent George Arlotto to leave school breakfast and lunch prices unchanged for the fifth consecutive year at its next meeting, scheduled for 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 2, 2018, in the Board Room at the Parham Building, 2644 Riva Road, Annapolis.

Under Dr. Arlotto’s recommendation, full-price breakfast at all levels would remain at $1.50, elementary school lunches would cost $2.75, and secondary school lunches would cost $3.00. The price of milk would remain at 55 cents.

Reduced-price breakfast and meal prices at all levels would also remain unchanged.

Anne Arundel County Public Schools meal prices have not changed since the 2014-2015 school year.

The school system’s Food and Nutrition Services receives no county funding, and instead relies on revenue from federal reimbursements (58 percent), food sales (38 percent), and state funding (4 percent) to operate.

At Wednesday’s meeting, the Board will also:

  • hear an overview of County Executive Steve Schuh’s recommended Fiscal Year 2019 budget for the school system. The County Executive will present his plan to the County Council on May 1.
  • get an update on the school system’s efforts to reduce instances of bias-motivated behaviors and promote equitable practices of acceptance and inclusion.
  • discuss the impact of recently passed legislation allowing school systems to add five days to their school year calendars beyond June 15 without needing a waiver from the Maryland State Department of Education.

Wednesday’s meeting will be held in the Board Room at the Parham Building, 2644 Riva Road, Annapolis. The Board will meet in a public session at 8:30 a.m. for the sole purpose of voting to go into closed session, during which time it will discuss confidential matters as permitted by the Maryland Open Meetings Act including, but not limited to, legal advice, personnel, and negotiations. Closed session is not open to the public. The public session of the meeting will resume at 10 a.m.

A complete agenda for the meeting accompanies this news release. More information on agenda items will be posted on the AACPS website in the Board Docs section under the Board of Education tab.
