Chesapeake Science Point Public Charter School (CSP) students Jeremy Dy and Anthony Krieger earned the right to represent Maryland at the Raytheon National Mathcounts Competition next month by finishing second and third, respectively, at the state competition recently.
The eighth-graders will be part of a four-member team at the national event in Washington, D.C. This marks the first time two Anne Arundel County students have been members of the state team.
Mathcounts is a competitive yearlong program that features regional, state, and national competitions. In each competition, students compete in four different rounds designed to test different aptitudes. A student’s scores in two of those rounds, a “sprint round” where students face 30 problems in forty minutes without the benefit of calculators and a “target round” where students tackle in sets of two, with six minutes to solve each set,” are used to determine individual rankings and qualifications.
Scores in two other rounds are also used to calculate a team score. CSP finished fourth as a team, with Dy and Krieger being joined by Kristofer Burkowski and Benjamin Kelm.
