Eight schools will close one day early due to construction projects
The Maryland State Board of Education has granted Anne Arundel County Public Schools’ request for a two-day waiver of the 180-day school calendar requirement, meaning that unless schools are forced to close forinclement weather again, the last day of school for students at all but eight schools (detailed below) would be Friday, June 14, 2013.
The waiver request came as a result of two days in October in which the school system canceled classes because of the impact of Hurricane Sandy. AACPS made the request because a State of Emergency had been imposed on each of those days by Gov. Martin O’Malley.
AACPS builds four days into the Board-adopted school calendar for inclement weather, but has used just one other than the two days just waived by the State Board.
Parents and employees should also note the following key dates in place with the revised calendar:

The last day of school for graduating seniors is Thursday, May 30, 2013.

The last day of work for teachers is Monday, June 17, 2013.
- The last day of class at the two Centers for Applied Technology is Monday, June 10, 2013.
Any additional days needed for inclement weather would alter the last day of school accordingly.

Construction projects at eight schools
The Maryland State Board of Education also has approved waivers of the state’s 180-school day requirement for eight schools: Annapolis High School; Central and Severn River middle schools; Phoenix Academy; and Crofton, Lothian, Mills-Parole, and Point Pleasant elementary schools – so that they can prepare for summer construction projects.
The waivers mean that the school year for students at those schools will end on Thursday, June 13, 2013. Those schools will also open the 2013-2014 school year on Tuesday, August 27, 2013, one day later than other students.
