The Board of Education of Anne Arundel County is scheduled to give formal approval to the 2017-2018 School Year Calendar at its next meeting, set for November 2, 2016.
The calendar to be presented to the Board was approved by the school system’s Calendar Committee, a group that consists of AACPS employees, students, and representatives of employee bargaining units and parent groups. It fully complies with Gov. Larry Hogan’s executive order to begin classes for students after Labor Day and conclude them no later than June 15.
Specifically, classes for the 2017-2018 school year will begin for students on September 5, 2017, (the day after Labor Day) and are scheduled to conclude on June 15, 2018.
To accomplish this, the following significant changes were made to the calendar as compared to the current year:
- The Easter/Spring Break has been reduced to three days (March 29, 2018, through April 2, 2018). State law requires schools to be closed on Good Friday (March 30, 2018), and Easter Monday (April 2, 2018).
- The number of days built into the calendar for inclement weather closings has been reduced from five to three.
The draft calendar also provides that should more than three days be needed for inclement weather closings, Anne Arundel County Public Schools would seek a waiver from the Maryland State Department of Education to open schools for students on April 2, 2018.
The draft calendar also maintains the three-day Thanksgiving break put in place this year. The complete draft calendar can be found here.
The meeting will be held in the Board Room at the Parham Building, 2644 Riva Road, Annapolis. The Board will meet at 8:30 a.m. to vote to go into closed session, during which time it will discuss confidential matters as permitted by the Maryland Open Meetings Act including, but not limited to, legal advice, personnel, and negotiations. Closed session is not open to the public. The general session of the meeting, which is open to the public, will begin at 10:00 a.m.
A complete agenda for the meeting accompanies this news release. More information on agenda items will be posted on the AACPS website in the Board Docs section under the Board of Education tab.
The general session of Wednesday’s Board meeting will be broadcast live on AACPS-TV, which can be found on Channel 96 on Comcast and Broadstripe, and Channel 36 on Verizon. High definition broadcasts can be seen on Channel 996 on Comcast and Channel 496 on Broadstripe. Rebroadcasts are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. the day after the meeting and 2:00 p.m. on subsequent Sundays.
