State Comptroller Peter Franchot today honored Overlook Elementary School with a Silver Hammer Award, symbolizing the commitment of the school staff and school system to superior maintenance of the school building and grounds.
In a visit to the school, Franchot lauded the custodial staff for the part they play in the education of the more than 350 Overlook students.
“I believe it is imperative that we have well-maintained schools for our kids and school personnel… and that school systems who receive state taxpayer dollars are held accountable in ensuring that our school facilities are safe and free of deficiencies,” Franchot told an excited student body and staff at an assembly at the school today. “That’s why I’m particularly grateful to Overlook and the superb maintenance team here.”
Overlook was originally built in 1955. The Linthicum school underwent a $17 million renovation construction project completed in 2011.
“I like to say that our team is the Dream Team,” Overlook Elementary School Chief Custodian Sean Dubiel said. “We look at each classroom like our family is in there. That’s why we go the extra mile to do what we do every day.”
Franchot began the Silver Hammer Award program in 2010. He annually bestows it on one school in each of Maryland’s 24 jurisdictions.
“Sean and his team do an incredible job and are well-deserving of this distinguished honor,” said AACPS Supervisor of Facilities Lisa Seaman-Crawford. “His dedication to team work and his ability to lead by example have propelled Overlook into a well-maintained and sustainable facility. His efforts have saved the school system money because the building is kept immaculate and well-equipped. The team’s commitment and work ethic is a credit to the students and staff at Overlook and to Anne Arundel County Public Schools.”
