BOARD OF EDUCATION TO HEAR ABOUT POSSIBLE OPTIONS ON SCHOOL START AND DISMISSAL TIME SHIFTS FOR 2017-2018 SCHOOL YEAR AT APRIL 20, 2016, MEETING

The Board of Education of Anne Arundel County will hear about potential options for school start and dismissal time shifts for the 2017-2018 school year at its next meeting, set for April 20, 2016.

The potential options come in response to the Board’s directive last month for Superintendent George Arlotto to provide options under the following scenarios:

  • A shift in school start and dismissal times, beginning in the 2017-2018 year, under a scenario in which the County provides the $1.4 million requested in the Board’s Fiscal Year 2017 budget request, giving the school system a total of approximately $2 million (including approximately $602,000 previously allocated by the County) to utilize toward such an initiative.
  • A shift in school start and dismissal times, beginning in the 2017-2018 year, under a scenario in which the County provides no additional funding to the $602,000 previously allocated to utilize toward such an initiative.

Also at the meeting, the Board will consider a proposal to end the current school year for all prekindergarten and Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) classes on June 10, 2016, instead of doing so for just students in half-day programs. The change is being requested to allow prekindergarten and ECI teaches to take part in professional development surrounding curriculum changes for the upcoming school year.

The meeting will be held in the Board Room at the Parham Building, 2644 Riva Road, Annapolis. The Board will meet at 5 p.m. to vote to go into closed session, during which time it will discuss confidential matters as permitted by the Maryland Open Meetings Act including, but not limited to, legal advice, personnel, and negotiations. Closed session is not open to the public. The general session of the meeting, which is open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m.

A complete agenda for the meeting accompanies this news release. More information on agenda items will be posted on the AACPS website in the Board Docs section under the Board of Education tab.

The general session of Wednesday’s Board meeting will be broadcast live on AACPS-TV, which can be found on Channel 96 on Comcast and Broadstripe, and Channel 36 on Verizon. High definition broadcasts can be seen on Channel 996 on Comcast and Channel 496 on Broadstripe. Rebroadcasts are scheduled for 7 p.m. the day after the meeting and 2 p.m. on subsequent Sundays.
