As part of its ongoing discussion of school start and dismissal times, the Board of Education tonight asked Superintendent George Arlotto to prepare two plans for shifting school start and dismissal times beginning in the 2017-2018 school year.
The County provided the Board with $602,000 in its Fiscal Year 2016 budget to use toward start and dismissal time changes. The Board is requesting an additional $1.4 million in Fiscal Year 2017.
In a unanimously approved motion, the Board asked Dr. Arlotto to present plans attainable under the following scenarios:
- The County provides funding of the $1.4 million in the Board’s Fiscal Year 2017 budget request, leaving the school system with approximately $2 million to use toward the initiative.
- The County does not provide any additional funding in Fiscal Year 2017, leaving the school system with $602,000 to allocate to the initiative.
In discussion about the motion, the Board made clear that it is not obligated to accept either of the plans. Any approved plan would not be implemented until the 2017-2018 school year because of the time needed for contractors to order and obtain additional buses.
Dr. Arlotto will present the plans at the April 20, 2016, Board meeting.
