North County High School German teacher Cora Hofstetter has been named one of three winners of the German Embassy Teacher of Excellence Award.
The award has been presented annually by German Embassy Washington, in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut and the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG) since 2008.
“It’s truly an honor to receive this award and I could not have done so without the support of my wonderful department and local AATG chapter,” Hofstetter said. “It has inspired me to continue to improve my teaching so that I can better help my students learn.”
The award honors teachers who use student-oriented, open forms of instruction, audiovisual and electronic media to promote communication skills, allow for exchange support or virtual contacts with students in Germany, and focus on language competency when measuring performance.
The prize includes a two-week professional development course in Germany, offered by the Goethe-Institut. During their stay in Germany, award recipients experience the country anew, gaining a fresh perspective on teaching techniques, culture and society, and the German language. Award winners are also invited to receive their prize at the annual conference of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).
