SHIPLEY’S CHOICE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WINS LIBRARY SYSTEM’S 2015 CHESAPEAKE CUP

Shipley’s Choice Elementary School has captured the coveted 2015 Chesapeake Cup for its participation in the Anne Arundel County Public Library’s Summer Reading Program this year.

The cup is presented annually to a public and private school with more than 25 percent of its enrollment participating in the program.

“We put a great deal of emphasis on reading and I am so proud to see that our students extended their love of reading into the summer months,” said Shipley’s Choice Principal Beth Burke, who took over as principal this year when Rocco Ferretti retired. “Instilling a love of reading into youngsters is obviously critical because it sets them up for success in life. We are very proud to be the winners of this year’s award.”

The cup was presented to the school today by library officials who were joined by AACPS Deputy Superintendent Arlen Liverman. More than 17,000 individuals signed up for Anne Arundel County’s annual Summer Reading Club this year, an 11 percent increase over last summer’s enrollment number of 15,306.

This is the 19th year that the library system has awarded the Chesapeake Cup. It also awards framed certificates of achievement to each public and private school that achieves at least 25 percent participation in the Summer Reading Club.
