BOARD OF EDUCATION TO RECEIVE UPDATE ON READINESS OF SCHOOLS FOR 2015-2016 SCHOOL YEAR

The Board of Education of Anne Arundel County will hear an update on the readiness of schools for the 2015-2016 school year at its next meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, August 19, 2015. The meeting will be held in the Board Room at the Parham Building, located at 2644 Riva Road in Annapolis.

The update will include information from the offices of School Performance, Curriculum & Instruction, Advanced Studies & Programs, Student Support Services, Human Resources, and Facilities/Operations.

The 2015-2016 school year starts on Monday, August 24, with students in first through fifth, sixth, and ninth grades beginning classes. More than 80,000 students are projected to attend AACPS schools in the coming school year.

Students at six schools – Crofton, Lothian and Mills-Parole elementary schools; Magothy River and Southern middle schools; and the Mary Moss at J. Albert Adams Academy – will begin the school year one day later than other students because of construction projects at their schools.

The Board will meet at 8:30 a.m. to vote to go into closed session, during which time it will discuss confidential matters as permitted by the Maryland Open Meetings Act including, but not limited to, legal advice, personnel, and negotiations. Closed session is not open to the public. The general session of the meeting, which is open to the public, starts at 10 a.m.

Also at the meeting, the Board will review and consider approval of a contract for bus routing software. The software will be implemented and used to ascertain what efficiencies can be gained as the Board considers later school start times in the 2016-2017 school year.

A complete agenda for the meeting accompanies this news release. More information on agenda items will be posted on the AACPS website in the Board Docs section under the Board of Education tab.

The general session of Wednesday’s Board meeting will be broadcast live on AACPS-TV, which can be found on Channel 96 on Comcast and Broadstripe, and Channel 36 on Verizon. High definition broadcasts can be seen on Channel 996 on Comcast and Channel 496 on Broadstripe. Rebroadcasts are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. the day after the meeting and 2:00 p.m. on subsequent Sundays.
