North County High School sophomore Kristina Dyson has been selected from among a group of 200 students to represent Maryland at the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) World Leadership Conference next month in Chicago.
Kristina served as first vice president of the Chesapeake Regional Association of Student Councils (CRASC) during this school year. She is also the parliamentarian of North County’s Future Business Leaders of America chapter, and an avid member of 
the school’s Key Club, Technology Student Association, Model United Nations, and National Honor Society. Kristina is also an alumna of National Youth Leadership Training and vice president of administration of Venture Crew 3141, a co-ed branch of Boy Scouts of America. She is passionate about literature, service, and leadership. Kristina is also working on becoming a mentor for underclassmen at her high school.
“Kristina is a true leader who acts with others’ best interest at heart,” said Trekker Williams, STEM Department Chair at North County High School. “She is a highly responsible and focused student who always has a plan to reach her goals. She will represent the students of North County High School and the state of Maryland superbly.”
HOBY was established by actor Hugh O’Brian following a visit to Africa where he was inspired by a meeting with Dr. Albert Schweitzer in 1958. “One of the things Schweitzer said to me was the most important thing in education was to teach young people to think for themselves,” O’Brian said. “From that inspiration, and with the support of others who believe in youth and the American dream, I started HOBY to seek out, recognize, and develop outstanding leadership potential among our nation’s youth.”
Kristina and schoolmate Katya Doersam were two of nearly 200 students to attend the Maryland Youth Leadership Seminar in Emmittsburg last month. The four-day seminar brought together a select group of students to interact with distinguished leaders in the business, governmental, and educational arenas to discuss relevant present and future issues.
The HOBY World Leadership Congress will be held from July 18 to 25. More than 400 students from around the world will take part in sessions designed to build and enhance leadership skills.
