FOUR COUNTY SCHOOLS MAKE STATE’S TOP 50 IN U.S. NEWS AND WORLD REPORT RANKING OF BEST HIGH SCHOOLS

Led by Severna Park High School at No. 10, four county high schools are ranked among the 50 best high schools in Maryland, according to the latest study by U.S. News and World Report.

Arundel is the next county school on the list at No. 21, followed by Old Mill (36), and Annapolis (37). North County, which landed at No. 52, is the only other county high school ranked in the report.

U.S. News used a three-step process to rank more than 21,000 schools across the nation. They were:

  • Determining whether a school’s students were performing better than statistically expected for students in their state.
  • Assessing whether a school’s disadvantaged students (African-American, Hispanic, and low-income) were outperforming disadvantaged students in the state.
  • Evaluating college readiness performance using Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate test data.

Schools that received gold, silver, or bronze status based on the above criteria were eligible to be ranked. In Maryland, 67 schools received rankings.

In terms of national rankings, Severna Park came in at No. 308, followed by Arundel (577), Old Mill (1,069), Annapolis (1,083), and North County (1,709).
