Tema Encarnacion is getting the opportunity of a lifetime.
The Glen Burnie High School English Language Acquisition teacher is one of just 35 educators from the United States and Canada to be named a 2015 Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic Grosvenor Teacher Fellow. As part of the program, Encarnacion will take part in global expeditions and hands-on professional development designed to allow educators to bring immersive geographic learning experiences back to their classrooms and communities.
“I am thrilled and honored to have been chosen as one of the 2015 Grosvenor Teacher Fellows,” Encarnacion said. “I am confident that these experiences will contribute to my students’ understanding of global geographic learning and their journey in becoming environmental stewards. I am so excited to share my learning with the students of Glen Burnie High School and Anne Arundel County.”
Later this year, Encarnacion will be part of a 12-day trip aboard the National Geographic Explorer to Iceland and Greenland for a one-of-a-kind field experience. The team will be accompanied by Lindblad-National Geographic expedition experts.
Encarnacion, who has worked in Anne Arundel County Public Schools for 14 years and taught at Glen Burnie High School for the last five, will take part in hands-on workshops covering photography and outreach planning at National Geographic Society’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. She will also have the opportunity to meet Lindblad Expeditions’ naturalists and to network with previous years’ Fellows.
This year marks the ninth year of the Grosvenor Teacher Fellow Program, established to honor former National Geographic Society Chairman Gilbert M. Grosvenor’s lifetime commitment to geographic education. The program began with two fellows in 2007 and has grown each year.
