Seeing an avenue to enhance technology in the classroom, the Glen Burnie Rotary Club has donated a dozen Google Chromebook devices for students in Corkran Middle School’s AVID program.
The devices will enable students to view tutorial programs and do research and class assignments as part of the Advancement Via Individual Determination program. Corkran is applying to be a National Demonstration School for the AVID program, which helps students in the academic middle acquire the skills necessary to succeed in more rigorous coursework and gain admittance to college.
“This is an outstanding addition to our program,” Corkran Principal Adam Zetwick said. “Our students and our staff do incredible things in our classrooms, and the partnership of organizations like the Rotary opens even more doors to success.”
The club collected donations from members and applied for a grant from the Rotary Foundation to raise the $4,000 needed to purchase the computers. Helping Teachers Teach, powered by the NAACCC Foundation, Inc., on which some of the Rotary club’s members serve, also contributed $1,000 to purchase charging carts for the tablets.
Club members were at the school recently to present the devices to students and staff.
