COUNTY’S TOP SCIENTISTS SHOWCASE KNOWLEDGE, COMPETE FOR SPOT AT INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE FAIR

More than 300 secondary students from public and private schools will share their research in the disciplines of science, math, and engineering, at the Anne Arundel County Public Schools Regional Science and Engineering Fair at North County High School on March 8, 2014.

At stake are hundreds of awards and prizes from organizations such as Anne Arundel Community College, ARINC, Johns Hopkins University, Lockheed Martin, Marine Science and Technology, Northrop Grumman, US Army Research Office, the US Navy/US Marine Corps Office of Naval Research, and the Joint Spectrum Center.  The Grand Prize winner(s) will earn the right to compete at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) in Los Angeles in May 2014. More than $4 million in awards and scholarships will be awarded at ISEF.

Local students will discuss their projects with judges from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on March 8 in the North County High School gymnasium. Projects will be available for public viewing from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Winners of the regional fair will be announced at a ceremony set for 6 p.m. on March 13 at North County High School. Jack Andraka, a junior at North County and grand prize winner at ISEF in 2012 for his groundbreaking invention of a new way to detect pancreatic cancer, will be the featured speaker. The fair and ceremony are free and open to the public.
