BOARD TO DISCUSS CONTRACT FOR SUPERINTENDENT SEARCH FIRM, VOTE ON 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 SCHOOL CALENDARS

The Board of Education of Anne Arundel County will discuss and vote on approval of a contract for a firm to lead the search for the next Superintendent of Schools at its next meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, November 6, 2013. The meeting will be held in the Board Room at the Parham Building, located at 2644 Riva Road in Annapolis.

The Board last month voted to solicit bids from three firms used by other Maryland school systems: the Maryland Association of Boards of Education (MABE); Iowa-based Ray & Associates; and Illinois-based Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates. MABE declined to submit a bid to lead AACPS’ search.

The firm selected will be responsible for gathering public input on desired characteristics of the next superintendent, recruiting and screening applicants during the winter, and assisting the Board with arranging candidate interviews next spring. After gathering public input, the Board hopes to develop a formal job advertisement by early January and begin the interviewing process next spring.

Interim Superintendent Mamie J. Perkins’ contract runs through June 30, 2014. The new superintendent will begin a four-year term on July 1, 2014.

At the meeting, the Board will also formally approve a school calendar for the 2014-2015 school year and give tentative approval to a calendar for the 2015-2016 school year. The 2014-2015 calendar received tentative approval last November and has been posted on the AACPS website, www.aacps.org, since that time.

The Board will meet at 8:30 a.m. to vote to go into closed session, during which time it will discuss confidential matters as permitted by the Maryland Open Meetings Act including, but not limited to, legal advice, personnel, and negotiations. Closed session is not open to the public. The general session of the meeting, which is open to the public, starts at 10 a.m.

A complete agenda for the meeting accompanies this news release. More information on agenda items can be found on the AACPS Web site, www.aacps.org, in the Board Docs section under the Board of Education tab.

The general session of Wednesday’s Board meeting will be broadcast live on AACPS-TV, which can be found on Channel 96 on Comcast and Broadstripe, and Channel 36 on Verizon. Rebroadcasts are scheduled for 6:00 p.m. the day after the meeting and 2:00 p.m. on subsequent Sundays.
