Welcome Newcomer Program to Annapolis High School

September 20th, 2016|Curriculum & Instruction|

On Monday, September 19th, students new to the United States began the first “Newcomer Program” designed to meet their needs through concurrent enrollment in both day school and evening school.  English learners at Annapolis High School who are 17 years of age or older and have no transferable high school credits are eligible for this newcomer program.  Students arrive at school for lunch at 10:30, attend ESOL 1, and an art or physical education elective during traditional school hours.  Students then stay to attend Evening High School for Matter and Energy, Transitional Math, and a choice of ProStart or Stretch Your Wellness.  Social/emotional support is integrated throughout the week through both group and individual attention from the ISSO counselor and social worker.  The Newcomer Program provides students with a small class size program to ease their transition into American schools, while allowing them to complete valuable graduation credits with teachers who are focused on building content and language simultaneously.

Representatives from numerous offices in AACPS collaborated over the past two years to develop the ideas that led to this big day!

Finding a Path to College through AVID and the Gates Millennium Scholarship

September 15th, 2016|North County Stories, Our AACPS Stories, Our Alumni|

"As a junior in high school, the thought of college was an overwhelming and stressful one. With my teacher’s guidance through the AVID program, my questions were answered and I began to develop a plan. As senior year rolled around, I had a plan, but no financial means of achieving it. My teachers encouraged me to apply for the Gates Millennium Scholarship. When I received the decision email from Gates a few months later I scrolled down cautiously, only to see, "Congratulations!" and my life has forever been changed. " --Cierra Carter

Maryland State Parks will honor Every Kid in a Park passes for the 2016-2017 school year

September 12th, 2016|What's New|

Earlier this year, Governor Hogan announced that all 72 Maryland State Parks would honor the Federal Every Kid in a Park pass.  Fourth graders and their families can access State Parks, as well as Federal sites, for FREE! Passes for the 2016-17 school year go live on September 1. Visit https://www.everykidinapark.gov/  to obtain a pass and find Federal parks to visit, for both families accompanying individual 4th graders as well as for field trip experiences for 4th grade classes.  The pass grants entry for the student and three accompanying adults — or an entire car for drive-in parks — at more than 2,000 national parks, forests, wildlife refuges, and marine sanctuaries.  The website also offers educators and parents activities, trip planning books, safety and packing tips, and other helpful information.

To find Maryland State Parks, go to: http://dnr2.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/parkmap.aspx.

Please share this information widely to help teachers and parents to get passes for their 4th graders.

Jordan Potter, Annapolis High School, Class of 2011

August 26th, 2016|Annapolis Stories, Our Alumni, Then & Now, What's New|

Jordan always knew he loved working on cars. So after two years in the Automotive Technology Program at CAT South and with the support of the AACPS Internship Program, he became an intern at Tiff’s Foreign Car Care, a specialty care shop that focuses on high-end vehicles, during his senior year of high school. Years later, Jordan is still at Tiff’s, now as the Service Manger & Mechanic and still loves what he does.

"My robotics team 1111 (the Power Hawks) and the FIRST organization have provided me with so many skills and experiences that have changed who I am today. I joined the team last year, for the 2015-2016 season, and it was honestly one of, if not the greatest year of my life." -- Shannon, Grade 12

Learning to Love Politics in Mr. Sullivan’s Classroom

August 22nd, 2016|North County Stories, Our AACPS Stories, Our Alumni, Our Employees, Teacher Appreciation|

"Maryland's best-kept secret is that the best teachers in the world are at North County High School. One teacher for me stands out in particular. Mr. Dennis Sullivan, or "Sully," taught my AP U.S. Government, STEM Policy, and AP Human Geography courses and was also my (one-time) lacrosse coach. Sullivan has many strengths as a teacher, but by far his best attribute is his ability to get students excited about politics."--Christopher Frye, NCHS 2012 Graduate
