BOARD OF EDUCATION SCHEDULED TO APPROVE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR CALENDAR AT NEXT MEETING

The Board of Education of Anne Arundel County will consider and is scheduled to vote on formal approval of the 2019-2020 school year calendar at its next meeting on Wednesday, November 14, 2018. The meeting will be held in the Board Room at the Parham Building, located at 2644 Riva Road in Annapolis.

The Board will meet in a public session at 5:30 p.m. for the sole purpose of voting to immediately go into closed session, during which time it will discuss confidential matters as permitted by the Maryland Open Meetings Act including, but not limited to, legal advice, personnel, and negotiations. Closed session is not open to the public. The public session of the meeting will resume at 7 p.m.

The calendar recommended by the school system’s Calendar Committee can be found online at www.aacps.org/calendar. Key parts of the calendar, which conforms to state law, include:

  • The first day of class for students is Tuesday, September 3, 2019.
  • The last day of class for students is scheduled for Monday, June 15, 2020.
  • The calendar builds in two days for inclement weather closings, with a conditional third day on March 10, 2020 (currently a parent-teacher conference day) to be used if necessary.
  • As allowed under state law, the calendar designates June 16-22, 2020, as days on which students would attend class in the event of excessive inclement weather closings.
  • There are three days for Thanksgiving break and three days for Easter/Spring break.
  • In October 2019, there are two days for parent-teacher conferences at the elementary and middle school levels, and one day for parent-teacher conferences at the high school level.
  • In March 2020, there is one day for parent-teacher conferences at all levels.

The Board will also be presented with a tentative 2020-2021 School Year calendar, which is condensed even more than the 2019-2020 School Year Calendar because Labor Day falls on September 7, 2020.

Also at Wednesday’s meeting, the Board will hear a presentation regarding changes to the middle school schedule for the 2019-2020 school year.

A complete agenda for the meeting accompanies this news release. More information on agenda items will be posted on the AACPS website in the Board Docs section under the Board of Education tab.

The general session of Wednesday’s Board meeting will be broadcast live on AACPS-TV, which can be found on Channel 96 on Comcast and Broadstripe, and Channel 36 on Verizon. High definition broadcasts can be seen on Channel 996 on Comcast, Channel 496 on Broadstripe, and Channel 1961 on Verizon. Rebroadcasts are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. the day after the meeting and 2:00 p.m. on subsequent Sundays.
