“My road to teaching has been a family affair.”

November 22nd, 2016|CAT-North, Our AACPS Stories, Our AACPS Story Locations, Our Employees|

After 25 years in the classroom my father transitioned into another position within the board of education as an Internship Coach. I decided to apply for the Automotive Refinishing Instructor position that my father held for the past 25 years. As a family we were very excited that I was selected for the position… I don’t think I’d be happy doing anything else. You have to find passion in what you do, and I feel that passion. I enjoy going to work every day. There are always going to be problems in any career you choose, but you have to find the joy in it. If there is no joy, there’s no point.

October 10th, 2016|Our AACPS Stories, Our AACPS Story Locations, Our Employees, Southern Stories|

“A pertinent question to ask during this month where we recognize administrators is what experience prepared you for the challenges of the position? Of course the numerous workshops, books/articles read and years worked in the classroom helped. But in my particular case, my many years coaching on the sideline provided me with incredible advantages that translated to the skills I would need as an administrator.”—Kevin Buckley, Principal

Welcome Newcomer Program to Annapolis High School

September 20th, 2016|Curriculum & Instruction|

On Monday, September 19th, students new to the United States began the first “Newcomer Program” designed to meet their needs through concurrent enrollment in both day school and evening school.  English learners at Annapolis High School who are 17 years of age or older and have no transferable high school credits are eligible for this newcomer program.  Students arrive at school for lunch at 10:30, attend ESOL 1, and an art or physical education elective during traditional school hours.  Students then stay to attend Evening High School for Matter and Energy, Transitional Math, and a choice of ProStart or Stretch Your Wellness.  Social/emotional support is integrated throughout the week through both group and individual attention from the ISSO counselor and social worker.  The Newcomer Program provides students with a small class size program to ease their transition into American schools, while allowing them to complete valuable graduation credits with teachers who are focused on building content and language simultaneously.

Representatives from numerous offices in AACPS collaborated over the past two years to develop the ideas that led to this big day!

September 15th, 2016|North County Stories, Our AACPS Stories, Our Alumni|

"As a junior in high school, the thought of college was an overwhelming and stressful one. With my teacher’s guidance through the AVID program, my questions were answered and I began to develop a plan. As senior year rolled around, I had a plan, but no financial means of achieving it. My teachers encouraged me to apply for the Gates Millennium Scholarship. When I received the decision email from Gates a few months later I scrolled down cautiously, only to see, "Congratulations!" and my life has forever been changed. " --Cierra Carter

Maryland State Parks will honor Every Kid in a Park passes for the 2016-2017 school year

September 12th, 2016|What's New|

Earlier this year, Governor Hogan announced that all 72 Maryland State Parks would honor the Federal Every Kid in a Park pass.  Fourth graders and their families can access State Parks, as well as Federal sites, for FREE! Passes for the 2016-17 school year go live on September 1. Visit https://www.everykidinapark.gov/  to obtain a pass and find Federal parks to visit, for both families accompanying individual 4th graders as well as for field trip experiences for 4th grade classes.  The pass grants entry for the student and three accompanying adults — or an entire car for drive-in parks — at more than 2,000 national parks, forests, wildlife refuges, and marine sanctuaries.  The website also offers educators and parents activities, trip planning books, safety and packing tips, and other helpful information.

To find Maryland State Parks, go to: http://dnr2.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/parkmap.aspx.

Please share this information widely to help teachers and parents to get passes for their 4th graders.
