We are AACPS: Students | Annapolis Middle School

Mariah Brown is recognized as an important contributor to Annapolis Middle School. The students appreciate her kindness and commitment and decided to ask her for a few minutes to do an interview with her. Ms. Brown obliged and here are the highlights of the conversation:

Hi Ms. Brown. We hope you are having a good day. We have a few questions for you. Do you remember how seventh grade was for you?

Hello and thank you for asking. I am well. Well, seventh grade was definitely a moment where there was a big shift in life for me. I don’t think I’ve shared this with my other students, but in seventh grade I spent half of the year and all of my eighth grade year in the hospital. I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. I missed a lot of time in school and it made me appreciate a lot of things in life more. It was a transformational period in my life.

Wow. That is very interesting. Ok, we have a new question. How many years have you been at Annapolis Middle, and have you been (working) anywhere else?

This is my second year at Annapolis and before I was at Annapolis, I worked in other school systems doing different types of work.

So, what school did you go to be a school psychologist?

I went to Towson University for undergrad and when I decided to get my masters, I decided to continue at Towson.

Okay. That’s cool Ms. Brown. Why did you decide to be a psychologist? What inspired you to be a psychologist?

In my heart I want to make a difference in the lives of students. I look back at my 7th grade year and the growth I felt, and I think to myself, I can help students because I can understand some of their difficulties.

That is a good reason. We are curious. Why did you choose Annapolis and AACPS?

I actually did my internship at Annapolis Middle and during my time here I fell in love with the students and the culture of the school. It feels right to be here.

Ok, we think we have a good question that is different, what’s your favorite tv show?

I only watch TV occasionally. I like Law and Order SVU and currently watching season 22. I’ve also been watching The Voice. You cant go wrong with singing shows, right?

What is your favorite part of the day that’s not interacting with students?

Honestly, I feel like I’m always interacting with students, but I’d say watching students getting on the buses. (Laughs) It’s just fun to watch, it’s not because I want you all to leave, its because of the energy and activity.

Ok. This is our last question. What’s your go to breakfast?

To be honest, I’m not really a breakfast person, but if I had to pick I would say a bacon, egg, and cheese on a bagel or a smoothie

Thank you Ms. Brown

–This group of students from AACPS organized the interviews and the questions. As their original advisor transitioned to a different position, Mr. Simon Wainwright and Ms. Carolyn Lozano picked up the mantle and helped the students with their endeavors to have more conversations with teachers.
