I am an AACPS: Principal, Old Mill Middle School South

In October, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Old Mill Middle School South collected $1300 for the AmyStrong Foundation.

Mrs. Chandler (Principal of OMMS) and Mrs. Feranec (Founder of the AmyStrong Foundation) were high school friends and still remain friends to this day. Amy was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 and started this organization that promotes prevention and awareness of this disease. It also seeks to provide hope and inspiration to survivors, those currently battling breast cancer, and their families as they endure the same fight. The AmyStrong Foundation also awards thousands of dollars in scholarships through the Marni McNichol Scholarship to students who have lost a loved one or have had a parent affected by breast cancer.

When Mrs. Chandler shared this story with her NJHS sponsors (Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. Burgess), they started brainstorming ways to raise money and bring awareness. The students were excited to advocate for the cause and did not hesitate to bring in money. NJHS gave each classroom a bucket and every room collected money for two weeks. Students also participated in “Wear Pink Day” to bring awareness for Breast Cancer in October. This is the first year doing this fundraiser and we hope to make it an annual tradition. We are going to grow our partnership with the AmyStrong Foundation by assembling “sunshine boxes” and look forward to collaborating in other ways in the future to support this great cause!
