Kayla Lugo

I am an AACPS: Kindergarten Teacher, Seven Oaks Elementary | 22-23 Rising Star

We are excited to spotlight Kayla Lugo. Kayla Lugo is a 22-23 Rising Star Teacher.

Ms. Lugo was nominated by the school’s principal, Ken Patterson. The Seven Oaks Elementary School Kindergarten teacher is a Skidmore College alum.

We had an opportunity to talk with Kayla about being recognized as a Rising Star Teacher.

Here are a few highlights of the conversation:

Describe who you are in 5 words or less.

Dedicated, reflective, funny, honest, and creative.

What was your motivation to go into education?

I started as a TA and was inspired by the teachers I observed to become a teacher.

What would you tell yourself about your potential as an educator?

The passion takes the front seat. I was encouraged by people I interacted while I was in college. So I’d say, “you’ve got this and you’ve had this.”

What one thing do you love about working in your school?

I have a really supportive team, but I also feel supported everywhere in the building. They’ve helped me working outside of my comfort zone to get better as a teacher and a person. The parents are very supportive and engaged as well.

What is your favorite memory of your family and friends supporting you on your journey as an educator?

At the end of last year when I was presented the opportunity to apply to become a teacher, I called my family to ask their opinions. For me I felt a little pressure because I’m a first generation college graduate, so I thought I had to dream bigger in terms of what the world thinks. I told them I wanted to be a teacher and they cheered me on and encouraged me to go forward and be the best I can be.

Thinking about the future of education, what are you most excited about for schools?

I am excited about the push for equity and working towards closing gaps for the students.

What is one hidden talent you have that no one, or few people, knows about and would surprise them?

I write poetry, but my special thing is I am really good at sports. I just pick up really quickly. For example I love rugby and fencing. I also like track and field and I won a competition throwing the shot put.

If you had to make a time capsule about this year as a rising star teacher and you had to include an item, an image, a quote and a song/melody, what would you include?

As the item, Seven the Lion our class talking piece. The quote, “Your feelings are valid, but so are my rules.” My first Unity Day picture with my students is definitely the picture and the class’ good morning song is the melody.

What is one reason why someone should choose to become a teacher?

It is the most rewarding job there is. Yes the students can be challenging sometimes, but it’s worth it. It’s about the long game and seeing the students grow.

The journey of an educator is a lifetime. We are thankful to those who have chosen to embark on this path. As a community, one of our greatest capacities is availability, so when the opportunities arise, find your own way to support education.
