First in Math, Suntex International Inc.
We are an AACPS: Business/Community Partnership | 2020 Business Partner of the Year: Under 50 employees
Recognized for their support of AACPS by Elementary Mathematics
Bob Sun, the CEO, inventor, and creator of 24 Game and First In Math has extended himself above and beyond a typical partnership with Anne Arundel County Public Schools. He has spent countless hours supporting staff and students in the district with the focus of removing math anxiety in youth, supporting a growth mindset, and positively impacting the teaching and learning that occurs each day in classrooms. He believes mathematics is a universal language and that all students can learn mathematics at high levels. Mr. Sun has been a side by side partner for three years, making trips to AACPS to facilitate professional learning for teachers and administrators, visiting classrooms, analyzing data to demonstrate the impact on student achievement, and working closely with the elementary math team while building a multi-state network that encourages us all to grow. With Elementary Mathematics adoption of the First In Math initiative, Bob has committed to providing the training. His impact on students and staff is best shared in their words. Below are a few quotes from students and teachers that bring to life the impact Bob Sun has made:
“Bob’s visit had an electrifying impact on my school. Teachers and students were buzzing with excitement because he took time to visit us. He took time to talk to our students. He took time to recognize that it takes a village to help students succeed and that we have a staff that makes the time to take an interest in the same things that students are required to do (playing FIM themselves).” Shannon Z. (MD City ES)
“Robert Sun impacted me with his game. It helped me with math because it is fun. He also impacted me when he came to our school, he shared his story. The story behind him was deep and sad. But he got through it. He also still helped the people who teased him (because he didn’t speak proper English) with math.” Brian (student)
The partnership between AACPS and Mr. Sun’s First in Math team supports innovative ways to engage students in mathematical exploration while engaging in practice of necessary skills and problem solving. Maryland College and Career Readiness Standards for mathematics are written for all students, and we recognize not all students learn the same way and at the same rate. The platform of First In Math differentiates for student level, interest, and ability to problem solve. Mathematics is a subject where you must practice to improve–and Mr. Sun shows us how to practice and problem solve, all while having fun. During visits with students, Mr. Sun frequently shares his personal process for creating each game found on the platform, the challenges he’s faced, the achievements students have realized and the importance of being
life-long learners. He encourages students to learn more about coding, computer science, and engineering as a basis for current and future learning. Truly, Mr. Sun is preparing students to be ready for today but also poised for what lies ahead.
The level of attention paid to the district and individual schools is unparalleled and has an incredible impact district wide. Mr. Sun has adopted Maryland City Elementary School, providing intentional support to meet the needs of students and teachers there. Teachers and students have personal interaction opportunities as well as time to learn from his personal knowledge and experience and the data shows encouraging growth. To have a person of this caliber in the educational setting working hand in hand with young learners is incredible. His authentic concern for students is lived out by not only his words but also his actions and beliefs. We are very fortunate to have this company and this man in partnership with the school system.
