I am an AACPS: Teacher, Quarterfield Elementary | 2019 Teacher of the Year Honoree
I believe our children should learn to lead a life that will leave a positive legacy. Teachers have an AMAZING influence on students and should use that power wisely. Every minute of every day is vital. It’s so much more than the academic content and curriculum. It’s life content, value of time, active listening, enthusiasm and compassion.
Teachers possess superpowers that can open a remarkable world for our students. A student’s sense of security is essential for success. The power of a hug, smile, or a kind word can be immeasurable. The influence of a student knowing they have a hero in their corner can help move mountains.
Once students have their security cape wrapped around them, they can open their minds and meet academic challenges head on. Teachers have the amazing power to help students learn new content and to help facilitate teamwork. One student’s weakness in my class can be countered with the strength of another.
All heroes take risks. In my classroom it is important for my students to take risks. To lead by this example, I make a point to make mistakes during lessons to show how to learn from them. It is ok to fall, but it is crucial to get back up and try again. I love that our community allows us to learn from one another both academically and emotionally.
My school community spans further than my classroom. My goal this year is to build relationships with all students in the building. A smile instantly appears when someone other than their teacher knows their name and says hello. I want them to know I care about them and for them to be happy and feel safe.
If my students and I have a positive relationship, they can start to accomplish their goals or maybe exceed them. It is in our duty, our power, to promote learning. I hope I can be the hero our children need.
