I am an AACPS: Teacher, Severna Park Elementary | 2019 Teacher of the Year Honoree

Teaching, helping children to realize their potential and grow. Teaching, providing children the tools necessary to learn new things and to build their knowledge base. Teaching, guiding and fostering a love for lifelong learning. These definitions help guide me daily to build my role as a Media Specialist and provide a foundation for the daily lessons that I plan. Using a variety of tools such as Makerspace, chromebooks, robots, online databases, flexible seating, and some “out of the box” thinking help make my classroom a positive experience for all. Children have different learning styles and being able to reach these diverse students with a variety of materials is just one of the many facets that make my teaching an amazing experience.

For the past 16 years, as a Media Specialist in an elementary school, my role as a teacher has changed. As new technology has developed and become available for use, I have been able to incorporate it into the programs that I deliver to our students. Google classroom, Beebots, online field trips, and online sharing have become intricate parts of our education adventure. Because of all the innovations and changes that have occured, and the flexibility that I have as a Media Specialist, I can honestly say I am so very fortunate to have a position that I love. Working in the Media Center allows me to use all types of tools and media to reach all different styles of learners. As our learners grow and change, modifying the tools allows me to reach more students on a daily basis.

My belief is that all students can learn if provided with tools that enhance the skills that we are trying to build and expand the foundation that they have already established. Utilizing a variety of methods of instruction as well as different unique tools such as Makerspace and presentation materials allows me as a teacher to reach more learners and help them grow.
