I am an AACPS: Teacher, Corkran Middle School | 2019 Teacher of the Year Honoree

It is my privilege as an educator to ignite and inspire the spirit in each child’s heart. My personal philosophy of education is that each student is a unique person who is yearning for motivation to become the best possible person they can be so that they will make a difference in the world. It is my job as teacher to make a difference in the lives of all my students. To leave a lasting impression that will inspire them to succeed in life and give back to others is my goal as an educator. It is by far the most important job in the world.

I believe that my classroom is inviting, safe, and nurturing. Children feel secure and valued. Effective instruction that is joyful and stimulating occurs on a daily basis. Strong relationships are developed and each child feels special and the talents of each child are recognized. Lessons involve active learning with opportunities for collaborative groups and hands-on activities. Poetry is emphasized, reading aloud to students occurs daily and silent reflective reading is included in the daily lesson. Students are encouraged to read, write, think and participate at all times. Mindfulness meditation is a strong part of my personal philosophy and is practiced in my classroom daily.

I believe in the three R’s of teaching: repeat, re-visit, reteach and make it relevant!

I believe it is important to value each student’s voice. Listening to my students is key. Listening to their stories, their poetry, and their thoughts is powerful. Giving my attention is my number one priority. I actively listen and teach students to do likewise. I allow my students to take risks, be creative, and I know they have been energized when I hear someone say, “Oh, it’s time to go already?”

Love keeps me teaching. I possess a love for my students, a love of literature, and a love for learning. It is important to give your heart to teaching!
