Amy Degenhard
I am an AACPS: Teacher, Jones Elementary School | 2019 Teacher of the Year Honoree
I believe in the “Art of Discovery”.
“Every child is an artist until they grow up”, is a famous quote from Pablo Picasso. I believe everyone is always an artist and I teach to provide every child the opportunity to explore a multitude of media in order to discover what type of artist they want to be.
My goal is to help students enjoy the creative process through laughter, imagination, teamwork, and perseverance. These classroom skills turn into life-long skills.
The “AHA” moments happen when glass and clay transforms in the kiln, magic appears as colors are mixed, and artists are revealed with Artful Thinking Strategies, a visual way of relating to cultures and perspectives through the discovery of artworks. These types of moments promote art integration and engage students in communication, during their creation of sculptures & paintings.
Collaborating as a table, class, or school, to create real art installations involves cooperation, kindness, and different points of view that build students social and emotional skills as well as an appreciation for each other, promoting positive growth mindsets.
Teaching at 13 different schools over the years has helped me develop valuable hands-on experience, a broad network of resources, and the confidence to break new ground with students. I work energetically to provide students the same confidence & courage to express themselves through the visual arts.
I encourage my students to take risks and tell their stories through art. I am very confident in my students and rarely offer the use of erasers. This type of strategy teaches them to trust in themselves, to envision & explore solutions, while promoting problem solving & critical thinking skills.
As a county resident most of my life, AACPS has provided a strong foundation for my work. My experiences as a student, parent, teacher and peer mentor have further shaped my outlook, and philosophy. I believe the greatest gift I can share is the passing on this “Art of Discovery”.
